The Al-Garrafah Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Independent Civil Aviation Authority to address Afghanistan’s air transportation challenges. This initiative aims to strengthen aeronautical services and develop Afghanistan’s air transport infrastructure by international standards.
Based on the provisions outlined in this MOU and at the request of the Government of Afghanistan, the foundation has committed to expanding Farah Airport and providing the necessary equipment.
- Extension of the Runway from the North Side (35 x 300 meters):
- We propose extending the runway by 35 meters in width and 300 meters in length toward the north. This expansion aims to enhance the airport’s operational capacity.
- Extension of the Runway from the South Side (500 x 35 meters):
- Our plan includes extending the runway southward by 500 meters in length while maintaining a consistent width of 35 meters. This extension will accommodate long-haul flights and improve overall airport capabilities.
- Drainage (500 meters):
- A 500-meter drainage system is essential for efficient water runoff during inclement weather. Proper drainage minimizes the risk of water accumulation on the runway and ensures safe operating conditions.
- Asphalt Roads Inside the Airport (530 meters long, 5 meters wide):
- We propose constructing asphalt roads within the airport premises, totaling 530 meters in length and 5 meters in width. These internal roads will facilitate smooth transportation for airport staff, maintenance vehicles, and emergency services.
- Road (100 meters long, 8 meters wide):
- An 8-meter-wide road, spanning 100 meters, will serve as a primary access route connecting the airport to external highways and nearby areas. This road is crucial for passenger drop-offs, cargo transport, and other vehicular traffic.
- Car Parking:
- We recommend designing and allocating sufficient space for car parking. Adequate parking facilities are essential for passengers, airport staff, and visitors.
- Marking (Runway Line and Access Roads, 10192 square meters):
- Precise markings on the runway and access roads are critical for safe operations. The proposed 10192 square meters of markings will include runway centerlines, threshold markings, and taxiway lines.
- Installing Fences Around the Runway:
- To enhance security and prevent unauthorized access, we propose installing fences around the runway perimeter. Additionally, these fences will deter wildlife, reducing the risk of bird strikes during takeoff and landing.
